It all started with Noah Cates (25:32). Afterwards, Brian O’Neill (31:13). A final mention for Sean Farrell (38.07). The United States was leading China, 4-0, going into the deciding period.

“I guess those two players [Farrell and Ben Meyers] won a tussle for the puck down low and flung it up front where it landed on my stick. To my good fortune, I inserted it, “as Cates put it on NBC. “Those men did a fantastic job downloading, and they got lucky at the end.”

Farrell continued his strong play to open the third period, scoring his second goal of the game to increase his team’s lead to five goals. Another two goals were scored by Meyers and Matty Beniers before Farrell completed his hat trick. Since Phil Kessel in Sochi in 2014, this was Team USA’s first hat trick at the Olympics.

The United States has fielded a young team since NHL players have declined to participate in these Games. This is a chance that Cates is excited to take.

“It means everything,” he exclaimed. We’re definitely making the most of this once-in-a-lifetime chance for some young folks to come and be a part of this.
